From Quito to Otavalo we have 2 hours by direct bus, here we will be able to observe the Ecuadorian Andes, but in our 1 day shared tour, we will visit 6 different attractions that we will have between Quito and Otavalo in a full day.

Otavalo Culture and Shopping Activities

Our trip is along the extensive highway known as «La Panamericana» to the north to reach the Quitsato sundial, located near the canton of Cayambe, named after the snow-capped mountain located there.

This cultural site was built to measure the solstices and equinoxes, in pre-Hispanic times, as well as «the other half of the world», the line of the equator this crosses place in the middle of the summit of the mountain Cayambe. Its people live from livestock and agriculture, a sector well known for the harvest of roses for export worldwide.

To learn a little more about its gastronomy, we have a stop in Cayambe to have a cup of coffee or Ecuadorian chocolate with a small dessert called Bizcochos; which are like a type of small breads baked in the oven with an incomparable flavor and best of all, we will go inside to see its elaboration process.

Our next place to visit is Otavalo Culture and Shopping. It is located in the province of Imbabura known as the Province of the Lakes, a few minutes from our main destination, we have the patios of a viewpoint overlooking Lake San Pablo and in the background the Imbabura hill, to decorate the landscape, a very quiet and beautiful place.

Then we arrive at the largest and most important indigenous handicraft market in South America. It is possible to visit this market every day of the week, here you can make purchases from the indigenous people of Otavalo.

But in our 1 day tour we coincide the days of the biggest fair where all the artisans are in La Plaza de los Ponchos we will have more variety of articles to know, here we have 2 hours to go shopping and then we go to Cotacachi. Here we will find another market specialized in leather products, as it is a small place where there are 45 minutes to go there. Our last place is the Cuicocha lagoon at 3068m (10.065.62 feet) on an active volcano with islets in the middle and we will be able to observe a lot of variety of unique plants in the area.
